Huff the Magic Dragon

No this isn't about pot smoking. I pass on grass, all the time. This post is in response to something that doesn't happen every day. The Orioles signed a decent everyday offensive player. No, they didn't bring back David Newhan. I'm talking about Aubrey Huff.

I knew it. I just heard you sigh. You guys are so settled on the O's being losers that instead of being excited you just muttered, "Great, another guy who's going no place but down". I'll confess I thought that as well, but really he should be fine here. Why do I harbor such hope?

When Huff played for the Devil Rays, he was their only power source. He was relied on to do much, and you have to give him credit, he performed well for a couple years. But I think the pressure, and not having anyone else protecting him in the lineup got to him. He played part of the year in Houston last year, but he was facing pitchers he's never even heard of before, so we can look past that.

Huff himself said at his press conference yesterday that the Orioles lineup is very likely the best he's ever been in. Yeah, I spit out my drink too. But take a look for yourself.

1. Brian Roberts 2B
2. Melvin Mora 3B
3. Nick Markakis RF
4. Miguel Tejada SS
5. Aubrey Huff LF
6. Ramon Hernandez C
7. Jay Gibbons DH
8. Kevin Millar 1B
9. Corey Patterson/Jay Payton CF

That's not too shabby. When you combine this new and improved offense with our overhauled bullpen and improving starting rotation you get: ...at least a .500 ball club. I mean really, anything less than that would be pretty disappointing. And before you say so what to being .500, just remember the Orioles haven't done that in almost 10 years.

So there you have it. Further proof that this is indeed the year of the Oriole. You should celebrate in style. Go buy yourself a Huff jersey before they get too expensive.
