The State of Maryland Basketball
Its the offseason for college hoops, and while its not as interesting as any of the professional leagues, there is still some news of note for the Terps. Some good, some bad. Read on to find out...
1) DJ Strawberry declared for the NBA draft. Techinically. But he's expected to withdraw once the NBA workouts are over. Supposedly, in a workout with ex-Dookie Jay Williams, DJ surprised some people with his athleticism. At 6' 5", he's bigger than most PGs and with "a little" more development could be a decent prospect for next year. Maybe.
2) Ekene Ibekwe also declared, but has since re-joined the Terps. Thankfully.
3) Gary Williams was overseas visiting the troops with several other prominent coaches. While he was gone, Jeff Jones (a top recruit of the 2007-2008 season) reneged on his commitment , and Eric Hayes, the key PG to next year's class, has a parent who publicly said "he has some questions for GW and the program." It sounds like Hayes is staying around for good, thankfully, but it sent some panic through the Terp faithful. Welcome back, coach.
4) GW hired Lefy Driesell's son as a new assistant coach as a recruiter and to bring some good karma back to the bench.
5) J.J. Reddick was picked up for a DWI. More strong moral fiber from Duke!
I think that's most of the news for the last month or two. The media has been painting a bleak picture of the Maryland program but hopefully GW will silence the critics with an NCAA run this next year. With a starting five of Hayes, Jones, Strawberry, Gist, and Ibekwe, the Terps should be explosive, taleneted, and experienced.
